After a while of pondering it seems like a phone that they have managed to cram everything into. There's touch-screen, qwerty-keyboard and more megapixels, gigabytes and other numerics than anything else before.
Now it all comes down to the user interface. How well they have integrated all that together. How easy are the gestures and touch-ui for developers? If I install, say a Jaiku-client, will it seem like it's totally out of place?
I'm wondering what is the correlation between the prices of 550€ and 990 €? 990 is 1.8 times as much as 550. Is the base price different in some countries - a tax cannot account for that even in ahem countries with a reputation for higher taxes?
"Nokia N97 -mobiilitietokoneen toimitusten arvioidaan alkavan vuoden 2009 ensimmäisellä puoliskolla, ja sen arvioitu verollinen suositushinta Suomessa on 990 euroa. Laitteessa on valmiina vuoden navigointilisenssi sekä yksi N-Gage-peli." http://www.nokia.fi/A4351021?newsid=1274513
Verkkokauppa lists all new products with a price tag of 990 €. When the actual price is released they will match the price. So probably 690 including VAT.
990€ sounds like a normal Verkkokauppa "hold" price, so i would not set anything on that (normally it is less once it is actually avaialable for colleciton :). Shame the offical FI press release has it at 990€ as well :(
The 550€ was before taxes and other expenses. The 990€ in the finnish press release is the estimated retail price. Nokia always estimates that the retailer will take a bigger cut than they really do. So I'd expect the device the debut around 900€ and drop fast to 690€ or so. And after a while you can get it for a lot less.
When the E90 was introduced the retail price was estimated to be over 900€, now you can get one for 730 or even less.
I believe it will all come down to the build quality, how bug free the software is and how easily Nokia will lure developers. I've heard that the Series S60 is a "bag hurt" for developers, but I wouldn't know first hand.
Also Nokia needs to debut App Store rival soon. The Download-app that currently ships with S60 phones will not cut it.
The real question is will it compete with the iPhone at any level? Everybody knows that the usability of the iPhone is excellent. And the same cannot be said about any S60 device...
I'm not either exited. But atleast Nokia is moving. Was there any news on the AppStore front? Apple has established a very dangerous ecosystem which will continue expanding quickly.

yep. would like to see a N97 with a E71 design and material language. as it is now, it looks more like a nicely painted lump of plastic.

@kungfiske: N95 is also crappy and old now.

how long did it take for the price to drop? not long, I'd guess.

@matti: but Nokia's press release is no Verkkokauppa.com product list.
Yes, the price will drop quite soon after the release.

They said 550 Euros today more than once ... before any kind of deal with a carrier

Just thinking... Why is the name N97. Reminds me of year 1997. N09 or then something totally different.
